Scrapbooking and Remix???

Greetings.

In class, we have discussed the creative practices and theories associated with scrapbooking and remixing creative projects.   In this post, please consider how theories of remix and popular technology influence or improve your creative writing.

You may want to consider how those theories my be evident in your self-portrait assignments such as the “ID Box” and “My Name”.  Also consider how practices associated with scrapbooking are present or invisible in your creative practices.

Your truly,

Dr. Hill

  1. Theories of remix and popular technology influence and improve creative writing because there are constantly new ideas. With theories of remix, there is always an original somewhere else; most likely someone has the same idea as you. If you discover that your idea has already been put out there, you are going to search for ideas and think of other ways to make your idea better than what is out there. In other words you're going to remix what is out there and make it better by making it your own. Theories of remix allow me to step outside of the box and create new ideas. Popular technologies also play a large role in creative writing because new technologies are constantly coming out, as well as being improved, updated, "remixed". The more updates that come out the better my creative writing becomes because there are more ideas out there that I can use as examples to make things my own.

    1. Great point Emily. If you could include any type of popular technologies in your self-portrait projects, what type of technology would you use and why? I also think that you and @MooreofKatie (see below) are having a similar conversation. Feel free to respond to one another on the blog.

  2. Remix represents our modern day society. Creating new ideas improving off of original works. The iPhone for example.. Apple took the original work (iPhone 1) and have now upgraded/remixed to an iPhone 5! Music is remixed off of different genres to create new ones. Writing specifically is remixed based off of the contribution of many works one has read to create your one creative original style. subjecting yourself to the diversity of genres and styles helps one create new remixed versions and combinations of the style to transform/invent a new one.

    1. I definitely think remix is a modern art and reflects our society. To me it is like using technology to express memory. I like what you say about the upgrades in products. What is something, anything academic or in the practical world that you would like to see remixed?

You may also want to start a conversation with @Emily. You share perspectives.

  3. Theories of remix and popular technology in this day and age are vital in improving creative writing projects. With the technology that we are exposed to today, there are very few limitations on what we can now do, and this should allow us to create more vivid, bold, creative, inspiring, etc, creative writing projects than in the past.

    1. I like what you said about the intersections of remix and literature. Can you be more specific? Do you want to make the old writing better, more modern, similar to the ways The Great Gatsby was redone in the movie "The Great Gatsby"? Or do you see your self as a very integral part of the remixing of old literature, in a writer's sense, like meta-fiction/writing?

  4. Theories of remix and popular technology can influence or improve creating writing projects by allowing you to start with an original idea and making it your own. By using another idea it can serve as a base point to allow you to come up with more creative ways to remix it and make it your own. Having a starting point or example allows you to change it up enough to where it might not even be identical to the original. By remixing other ideas we are able to further develop small ideas to even bigger and more complex ones.

    1. Thanks, Alexis.

Can you think of an example about how you can take a simple idea from one of your self portrait projects and remix it, make it more complex? This consideration may take some time. We can discuss it in class at some point.

  5. Many great historical writers built upon the ideas, thoughts, and notions of others to generate a larger whole of the idea. Remix theory can help improve my creative writing through the borrowing of themes, thoughts, and ideas and expounding upon theme, resulting in perhaps a larger and more intricate concept.

    1. I think in the same way you are describing remixing can take the form in literary allusions. Are there any specific references to literature that you plan or did incorporate into your self portrait assignment?

  6. Original work of another's work(s)
Creating work using more than one form of expression
Exploring ways a work/works can be displayed in nontraditional ways
Imagining the world of writing in different ways
Creating a work that is influenced by one or more other works
Having a base to work from and create an original from it
Putting your personality, perspective on an orginal work
Improving works by expanding the avenues a person can reach it

    1. I love the phrase "improving works by expanding the avenues a person can reach it". What are some avenues of distribution do you think is best?

  7. The concept of remixing can refer to the usage of tropes (tvtropes.org) in literature, movies, tv, films, etc. I personally remix tropes and stereotypes within my own creative writing as ways of tackling characters in different lights. Fanfiction websites (fanfiction.net) are completely built around remixing established characters and universes and creating new stories that the authors.

Fiction remixing has been done for years (plenty of authors have stolen from each other). Technology has permitted us to share how and the various variations of personal remixes of old media.

    1. Thank you for sharing www.fanfiction.net site with us.

I am really interested to see what type of technology tools you incorporate into your remixed creative projects.

  8. Inspiration from different things can spark ideas or memories that allow you to make your creative writing better. This allows you to compare and contrast your work with other pieces from the past. It allows you to think about the ideas that are being expressed and relay those messages while adding in your own thoughts and opinions.

    1. I like it that you are incorporating memory as an aspect of remix. What ways do you think memory inspires you?

  9. Remixing is what allows ideas to be revamped, and sometimes these altered ideas are taken to be something completely new, when in fact they are simply not being recognized in terms of the origin. I myself am a product of remixing. My personal style of writing has been developed based upon my continued exposure to a certain group of authors.
My personal favorite type of remix is that of music, especially when a song that is usually associated with a certain genre of music is stripped of that origin and rebuilt in a new one.

For example Apocalyptica's Smells Like Teen Spirit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox_oGroVEVg

Or even Fall Out Boy's version of Michael Jackson's Beat It: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk8Pb17pcQI

  10. Art Remix!
Titian, Venus of Urbino vs. Manet, Olympia

  11. Theories of remix and popular technology can improve my creative writing by allowing me to view an idea and expand to make the overall concept more subjective. Remixing is a large part of our society and allows anyone to take different aspects and create their ultimate idea of creative perfection. I personally enjoy music remixes because it allows a song's beat to be altered and enjoyed in various ways. Youtube videos are also a great example of technology remixing. These videos bring humor and an individual's ideas to an enormous audience. I love the notion to push forth with creative writing through remixing because it sets no limits for the writer and represents their ability to become an artist.

    1. I am glad you think the theories are appropriate for our creative writing class. If you could remix one story from any of your childhood favorites, which story would it be?
