Keeping in the Know: Literary Journals and Creative Writing at University of Kentucky
Greetings.
Did you know that there are three literary journals
produced by the University of Kentucky or University of Kentucky faculty members?
Shale -- An Undergraduate Literary
Magazine
Shale was originally founded under the name The Cat's Figment as a Jury Project
for the fellow under the Gaines Center for the Humanities. Since its inception,
it has been run by a Gaines fellow, who continually updates and expands the
reach of the journal to include more and more of the undergraduate creative
writing community. In 2011,The Cat's Figment was renamed Shale as a nod of respect and admiration for
the graduate literary journal, Limestone.
pluck! Journal of Affrilachian Arts
and Culture is a bi-annual publication released in the Spring and Fall. pluck! celebrates
outstanding contemporary literature, feature images, essays and articles from
voices of color from the states touched by the Appalachians (Kentucky,
Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Ohio,
Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania).
Limestone showcases
original and imaginative writing and art by residents of the Bluegrass region
of Kentucky and from across the nation. We are a venue that promotes new and
innovative creative writing.
Please review the submission policies and consider submitting some of your creative work. If you know of any other literary journals that you think the class members should know about, please post them here.
